Job: Senior Teaching Fellow and Co-Convenor, Arts of China module, SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art
I am delighted to share that I am starting a new position as Senior Teaching Fellow and Co-Convenor of the Arts of China module on the SOAS-Alphawood Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art. The SOAS-Alphawood course is a unique programme for all those with a serious interest in Asian art, regardless of personal, professional or academic background. We centre object-based study through visits to some of the best collections of Asian art, including the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, and we invite the world’s leading scholars, curators, and art market professionals to lecture on mediums spanning painting, ceramics, prints, metalwork, and especially, textiles!

I’m presenting a paper on the names given to British woolens in Qing society - feather satins, orangutan felts, feather coats and so much more!
Conference: Intertwined textiles: Influence of Asian fabrics in the European cloth industry (ca.1200-1900) (Museu do Oriente, Lisbon, June 20th-21st 2024).
I’ll be giving a paper, “A Cheaper Shade of Scarlet: Chinese Consumers, the East India Company, and Global Product Research,” looking at the EIC’s efforts to engage a global network of dyers, chemists, and merchants to develop lac dye into a viable alternative to the expensive cochineal.
Position: Co-Convenor of Craft, Technology, and Material Culture in Early Modern Asia
I am joining the convenors of the Craft, Technology, and Material Culture in Early Modern Asia reading group, part of the Consortium for History of Science, Technology and Medicine.
